Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Counseling
PTSD counseling helps individuals to overcome the physical and emotional effects of traumatic experiences, regardless of the nature of trauma or how long ago the incident occurred. Our psychologists and counselors have extensive experience treating individuals suffering from life-altering symptoms of PTSD using methods including EMDR therapy
While Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD was first discovered among military men that had endured the brutality of war, today we know that many individuals can experience lingering symptoms associated with trauma and painful circumstances. Individuals with PTSD often describe recurrent feelings of anxiety, fear, and hopelessness that they cannot seem to fix.
While the trauma of our past may seem like they will haunt us forever, there is hope. At Biltmore Psychology and Counseling, our PTSD therapists help individuals overcome the symptoms and difficulties of PTSD and guide them through the processes of grief and healing.

PTSD Counseling FAQ
PTSD counseling & therapy is a form of mental health treatment designed to help individuals process and heal from traumatic experiences that affect their emotional well-being, relationships, or daily functioning. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can develop after experiencing or witnessing events such as accidents, violence, abuse, medical trauma, natural disasters, or other overwhelming situations. PTSD therapy focuses on reducing distressing symptoms, such as intrusive memories, hypervigilance, avoidance, or emotional numbness, while helping individuals regain a sense of safety, control, and connection. Therapy is tailored to each person’s experiences and paced to support healing without overwhelming the nervous system.
You may be experiencing PTSD or trauma-related symptoms if you notice ongoing reactions long after a traumatic event has passed. Common symptoms include intrusive thoughts or flashbacks, nightmares, strong emotional or physical reactions to reminders of the trauma, difficulty sleeping, irritability, emotional numbness, avoidance of certain people or situations, or feeling constantly on edge. Trauma-related symptoms can look different for everyone and do not always meet full diagnostic criteria for PTSD. Our licensed counselors and therapists can help assess your experiences and determine whether PTSD therapy or another trauma-informed approach may be helpful.
PTSD is commonly treated using evidence-based, trauma-informed therapies that support both emotional processing and nervous system regulation. These may include Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Prolonged Exposure (PE), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Brainspotting, and trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Many therapists also integrate somatic approaches, mindfulness, and stabilization skills to help individuals feel grounded and safe during treatment. The choice of therapy depends on the individual’s needs, preferences, and history, and our therapists adapt approaches to ensure care is supportive and manageable.
When provided by a trained, trauma-informed therapist, PTSD therapy is considered safe and is designed to reduce distress over time. Therapy does not involve forcing someone to relive traumatic experiences before they are ready. Instead, treatment is carefully paced, with an emphasis on building emotional safety, coping skills, and trust before addressing traumatic experiences directly. While discussing trauma can bring up difficult emotions at times, therapists monitor reactions closely and help clients stay grounded and regulated. Open communication about comfort levels and boundaries is an essential part of ensuring therapy remains supportive rather than overwhelming.
